Extension | Costa Rica | Guanacaste | Sanctuary

Costa Rican Coffee is held by many to be the best coffee in the world - Starbucks imports most of it's coffee from Costa Rica and their most expensive coffee is Tarrazú Geisha. Today we're going to follow the life of a coffee bean from cherry to cup at a small co-operative that produces a less acidic and better balanced coffee.

Also on the days agenda is a visit to Barra Honda National Park, home to a mesa (a flat topped mountain with steep sides) that rises almost 1000 feet over the Tempisque valley. Up to the 1960's people thought this mesa was a volcano, but it's a 60 million year old coral reef that tectonics and acid rain have transformed into a mountain with an intricate system of caves filled with fascinating limestone sculptures. We'll hike up the mountain (it's a mesa, so it's steep, and it's reasonably challenging) to the cave entrance, where things get a little easier. We'll descend into the cave by ladder and spend a few hours exploring with guides before coming back up to the sunshine for the hike back down off the mountain.

Extension | Costa Rica | Guanacaste | Volcano

This is your chance to see what very few other have seen up close, the lake-filled crater of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. It's a hike though, you will have to climb 3,281 feet to earn these bragging rights! The summit is 5,925 feet above sea level so the views can be astonishing - if it's a clear day we'll be able to see Nicaragua, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Ocean. We'll have lunch at the top, enjoying the complete lack of tourists and the feeling that we've gone very far back in time.

The crater hike takes about 8 hours, and we'll cover about 10 miles. For those who prefer less altitude and/or distance in their hiking routes we highly recommend hiking to some of the spectacular waterfalls in the park. Make sure to include La Crangreja ("The Crab") Waterfall - it drops 131 feet into a swimming hole with copper salt giving the water a beautiful blue color. There are three other outstanding waterfalls, our Program Director will help you choose!
