  • Our Location +

The above panorama of Portsmouth, NH was taken at early dusk from Badger Island in Kittery, ME by Derek Demeter.

We're located an hour north of Boston, Massachusetts in beautiful Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  One of our founders loves summer on the seacoast's warm sandy beaches, while the other (though not averse to beaches) loves winter on the powder covered mountains of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

  • Our History +

Students Love Travel was founded by Robert Delorie and Peter McGowan, both formerly senior executives from some of the best known educational tour operators in the travel industry.

Peter and Robert crossed paths a few times before deciding in 2007 to collaborate on an alternative travel experience for students, one that blended two distinctly different experiences into one:  the super-expensive immersion trip (year abroad, semester abroad, summer abroad) which typically includes very little travel, and the super-cheap sightseeing trip which typically includes very few opportunities to develop language skills.

In early discussions two things quickly became clear:   We would need to travel in small groups because large groups of over-stimulated students are almost impossible to educate effectively; and world language teachers complemented with local guides make perfect group directors because they have typically lived and studied abroad, are enthusiastic and experienced travelers, love to teach, and can be wholeheartedly trusted with students.  Thus, a year later Teachers Love Travel LLC was born and we began to build our team of teachers.

Over the subsequent years our team of teachers grew and they established our reputation for excellence in educational travel, but we found ourselves constantly explaining that Teachers Love Travel operated trips for students, not teachers.  For the 2012/2013 season Teachers Love Travel LLC commenced doing business primarily as Students Love Travel.

We added two new product lines for the 2012/2013 season:  Grad Trips (for high-school seniors), and College Trips.

  • Our Founders +

    Robert242x150Robert Delorie
Rob grew up in Atkinson, NH.  He went to Middlebury College, where he studied French, German, Spanish, and Italian.  After receiving his B.A. in German Language & Culture he pursued a career in business management working for various international companies - two in student travel - before returning to Timberlane High School as a French Teacher only to be drawn back to student travel.  He has lived in Boston, Chicago, and Frankfurt.  He now lives with his family in Exeter, NH

    Peter242x150Peter McGowan
Originally from Ireland, Peter emigrated to the United States as a Software Engineer specializing in Enterprise Systems.  Peter worked in the Online Publishing, Online Finance, Online Medical, and Online Grocery industries before ultimately becoming CTO for one of the largest student travel companies in the USA.  It was during this time that he developed a deep understanding of the student travel business and a passion for educational travel.  Peter lives with his family in New Castle, NH.

  • Our Mission +

We firmly believe that the most effective and efficient way to master a skill is to practice it in the real world, among a small group of friends who are willing to help, and a mentor who can provide additional guidance.
    It
is our mission to develop the world travel skills of our students while they have the trip of a lifetime, achieved by establishing this environment in some of the most fascinating places on earth.

  • Our Product +

The following characteristics of our trips reflect a desire to provide students with the experience of an independent traveler while maintaining the affordability and safety of traveling as a group. We keep your group small, most trips have 8 to 16 students. This allows your group to engage in the same activities as an independent traveler, enjoying small street cafés, ordering individually, engaging in friendly banter with locals, traveling on small shuttle buses and taxis. Depending on where we're traveling your group can also take advantage of activities organised specifically for small groups, for example horseriding or kayaking..

    Itinerary
Our itineraries are comprehensive. Because flights are expensive we try to extract as much value out of them as possible. You're out early in the morning, in late at night, and your day is loaded with great activities. Our longer trips allow you to relax and become immersed, with activities including picnics, beach time, and open markets.

    Group Director
We always provide you with a Group Director. Your Group Director will handle on-ground logistics that cannot be handled in advance, typical tasks include making sure rooming arrangements are accurate at hotels, shuttle buses and taxi drivers are on time, meal reservations are prepared, and gratuities are paid Your Group Director knows the destination well and can help you find great stores and restaurants, interesting plazas, promenades and towers, and places where you should take photographs. For groups of students the best Group Directors have a teaching background, passion for the destination, great rapport for students, and come highly recommended by peers, students, and parent.

    Chaperones
If your group is being co-ordinated by your teacher (a school trip), then your teacher is your chaperone. If you are a high-school senior forming your own group (a grad trip) then you don't need a chaperone, your Group Director serves as your chaperone.

    Flights
Connections always waste time, lots of connections waste a lot of time, and missed connections can waste an immense amount of time. We try exceptionally hard to provide direct flights, and the earlier you enroll the more likely it is that your trip will have direct flights. We can usually let your group co-ordinator know your flight information before you enroll.

    Hotels
Hotels outside the city center (suburban or metropolitan hotels) not only take you away from the pulse of the city, they waste a lot of time walking or catching public transport. We always book hotels in the heart of the city, within walking distance of major points of interest. Hotels should be also safe and comfortable, so we book three star hotels. The three star rating is awarded to hotels with a staffed lobby (not just a swipe card), daily room cleaning, private bathrooms with towels and hair dryer, telephone in the room, internet service in the room or lobby.

    Meals
Breakfast is usually a buffet at the hotel. Sometimes we head out for breakfast, especially if the destination has breakfast spots that qualify as points of interest.

    Facebook
Your Group Director will be taking pictures constantly and uploading them regularly to a Facebook along with commentary on the days events. Don't be shy, if you would like a personal shot, or a shot with your best friend, or all your new friends, just ask! Yyou may find you have started a flurry of similar requests.

    Private Trip Website
Each trip has a secure private site where confidential infornation like hotel rooming lists, airline reservations, and contact infornation is shared with trip participants.

    All-Inclusive
Your fee includes everything except lunch and pocket money.

Help with Refugee and Relief Worker Housing

    airbnb.org
Millions of Ukrainian refugees crossing the border into Europe and thousands of aid workers arriving to help provide relief has resulted in a housing crisis. You can make a donation to help airbnb.org and it's partners (including IOM - International Organization for Migration, IRC - International Red Cross, International Medical Corps, CORE - Community Organised Relief Effort, IRC - International Rescue Committee, and HIAS - The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) connect relief workers and refugees with housing.
    HELP CONNECT PEOPLE WITH HOUSING
Can you provide a comfortable bed and basic amenities for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks?
Airbnb will protect your home with 184,000,0000 in cover and they have partnered with the UN Refugee Agency to check refugee guests for eligibility and assist them before, during, and after their stay.

    Help support Soldiers and Paramedics

    Sunflower of Peace
This Boston based organisation is providing first aid medical tactical backpacks for paramedics and doctors on the front lines. Each backpack's contents are specially selected to be used by highly skilled military combat groups - marines, special forces units and intelligence. These groups operate in areas without access to Medical Facilities or Emergency Care. Therefore, it's crucial that each combat group have a soldier capable of acting as a medic on the spot. Each backpack has the ability to save up to 10 lives: Ukrainian soldiers, civilians, volunteers, and children. They includes a variety of first aid supplies: bandages, anti hemorrhagic medicine like Quikclot and Celox, medical instruments, and a means for survival in extreme conditions.

    Help the kids

United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF)
UNICEF's humanitarian work in Ukraine is focused on safeguarding children's rights to safety, health, education, psychosocial support, protection and water and sanitation services. Water and education systems have been and continue to be frequently targeted in attacks, and access to safe water and schooling is disrupted and remains limited as a result. Ukraine's increasingly fragile health system continues to struggle to cover essential services, posing an immediate threat to the lives and well-being of the country's 7.5 million children.

As Putin's military invasion of Ukraine has unfolded, so too has a humanitarian crisis that has forced civilians to flee their homes or take refuge in bomb shelters and subway stations throughout the country.
Over 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled since the attack began, a number which continues to climb.
For anyone who would like to help the refugees and relief workers outside Ukraine, or the citizens, relief workers, and soldiers within Ukraine, we've curated a list of organizations worthy of your consideration...

Lake Titicaca - the highest navigable lake in the world - is home to a village of over 100 floating islands ingeniously constructed from the totoro reed that's native to the lake itself. Each island has a lifespan of about 10 years, so they're constantly being replaced. The Uros Islands are yet another example of how the Peruvian people are masters of their enviroment.

The Incas, a small tribe in the southern highlands of Peru, built one of the largest, most tightly controlled empires the world has ever known. Astonishly, they did it in less than 100 years without the wheel, powerful draft animals, iron working, currency or a writing system. By the time the Spanish arrived, the empire stretched from Argentina to Columbia and had a population over 12 million.
Over the following decades smallpox from Spain killed an estimated 95% of the Americas inhabitants, leaving behind roads, walls, and irrigation works that are still in use today.

This itinerary develops an appreciation of China's history and culture, it's complex history with the west, current system of government, future plans/dreams, and most importantly it's people, who are some of the friendliest you're likely to meet.
We'll arrive in Bejing - the political/cultural capital, take a high-speed bullet train to Xi'an - the historic capital and eastern end of The Silk Road, take an overnight sleeper train to Tongli - an ancient river town that's called the Venice of the East, then a quick bus ride to nearby Shanghai - the extraordinarily wealthy financial capital of China.

About Us | Scholarship Fund

"Support" by artist Lorenzo Quinn (son of actor Antony Quinn) hugs the 14th century walls of Venice’s Ca’Sagredo Hotel.
The pair of 5,000-pound white hands appear to prop up the historic hotel from falling into the water, symbolizing the threat that climate change has on history, but also the power that mankind has to stop it.
The sculptor intentionally based the shape of the hands after his children, to show the innocence, and power, of the next generation.
